Benedict Cumberbatch reads The Order of Time

Amanda Kennedy

Carlo Rovelli's new book, The Order Of Time, is due to be released by Penguin next month. As with Rovelli's previously published works in translation, Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and Reality is Not What it Seems, the hardback edition is a thing of beauty, designed by my favourite book designer, Coralie Bickford-Smith.

Yet... just when we thing things couldn't get any better, we discover that Benedict Cumberbatch will be narrating the audiobook edition. Today, Penguin have released a sample, featuring the book's opening lines:

Carlo Rovelli's writings explain physics in a way which is both accessible and beautiful:

'We are time. We are this space, this clearing opened by the traces of memory inside the connections between our neurons. We are memory. We are nostalgia. We are longing for a future that will not come.'

If you need any more convincing, here is the blurb for The Order of Time:

Time is a mystery that does not cease to puzzle us. Philosophers, artists and poets have long explored its meaning while scientists have found that its structure is different from the simple intuition we have of it. From Boltzmann to quantum theory, from Einstein to loop quantum gravity, our understanding of time has been undergoing radical transformations. Time flows at a different speed in different places, the past and the future differ far less than we might think, and the very notion of the present evaporates in the vast universe.

I cannot wait for the book's release, and will undoubtedly publish my own review... once I've read through a couple of times!
